Hair Colour Do's And Don’ts For Brides!
BY Apoorva | 10 Mar, 2018 | 5 min read
Every bride wants to look perfect on her wedding day, and nothing can make the difference in photos more than devoting time beforehand to achieving that perfect hair colour. And believe us when we say that it doesn’t happen in just one sitting – no, even if it’s a celeb hairstylist. Your hair has its own mind (remember bad hair days?) and you need to give it some real TLC before your wedding day.

DO start early
To achieve the perfect wedding hair colour depends on the condition of your hair and how long you have till your d-day, but the key is to plan ahead. If you have severely damaged hair, you may need a whole year of rehab to get your hair to a beautiful, flawless, and healthy look. If your hair is in good shape and condition, 5-6 months is good enough to first visit a hairstylist.
DON’T be afraid to show pictures
This can be a huge help as then the stylist can envision what you want. Do bear in mind that the same look may not suit your skin tone or face cut but at least they will get a direction. So start pinning that Pinterest board!
DO your research
Yes, your hairstylist will do the research but you should do your research ABOUT the stylist. Ask about their technique, what's most gentle for your hair, and what's the most cost-effective for you. And don’t forget to check out social media pages for past work and reviews!
DON’T do something drastic
Weddings are all about being new, but opting for blue highlights may just be bordering over drastic. Wedding planning can get emotional so you may just do something that you have never done because of your mood swings so bear that in mind. You don’t want to damage your hair with re-coloring!

DO consider your wedding looks and outfits
If you are planning an intricate braid, lighter hair colors work better. If you have a red lehenga, you may not want something too jarring like a global blonde. With our black hair, only the silhouette or shape of intricate hairdo can be seen, and the details will be barely visible, especially in pictures.
DON’T forget the products
We understand that if you are going to a top-end salon or stylist you will expect the best but don’t ignore it. Hair will look its best when it's prepped with the right products. Ask what brand they are using, if you are allergic to certain dyes or ingredients, let them know. Also, ask about post hair color maintenance.
DO consider your hair type and skin colour plus makeup
You may have seen balayage on straight hair but it will look drastically different on curly hair so make sure that you consider your hair type before option for any particular hair color or treatment. Skin color, on the other hand, and your makeup also counts on the big day. Brides who use reds, fuchsias and browns in their makeup would look great in balayage, soft browns, blonde highlights. While dusky women who wear nude makeup alongside a smokey eye should look at mahogany-type wamer hues.
Hair Texture is a thing!
Frizzy hair can pull off fun contrasting highlights and wild hues but softer, silkier hair might just be game with natural-ish colors. The hair colour - you must know - should add to your look. Either it should add volume or add texture and look healthy.
The colours to choose
Browns of all shades go well with Indian skin so opt for a color that goes with your skin tone. Gold hghlights are a safe bet too. We personally love Balayage, a colouring technique that is a deeper way to add highlights which gives your hair an illusion of thicker locks. Also, balayage looks great in wedding pictures adding just the best volume and lighting to your hair.
What's the timeline on hair colour?
Before two weeks from your shaadi is too early, and doing it less than one week before your wedding is too late according to us. Hair color needs a week - to settle in and look good so one week before your wedding is perfect.
Protect your hair
From the sun, salt water, and chlorine - how does one do it? By applying conditioner before you get in the water. Conditioner adds a coat your hair prevents discoloration and tepidness. Stay away from heating tools and deep-condition your hair before the wedding.
Basic Tips To Take Care Of
- Do a clear gloss every two months to keep your hair shiny and healthy.
- If you're going for a full head of colour, do it a week before the big day. If you have to do it earlier, go for a balayage effect or highlights so the regrowth looks more natural.
- Do opt for conditioning treatments before you colour your hair
- Be honest to your stylist about your hair colouring history or even if you apply Mehendi
- Run your hair colour plan by someone. A second perspective will help!
- If you do decide to something big, like global blonde, go gradually instead of trying to do it all at once
- Include nutritious foods like dry fruits, avocados, fish, fresh vegetables and lots of water to your diet at least 6 months prior.
